“The Challenge - 2017”

2017 will see the fifth running of “The Longest Day Down”

...and having raised over £75,000 so far for Cancer Research UK over the last three years, deciding to run the event again has been an easy decision.

The basic format of the event has proven to be very popular and will remain the same for 2017.

  • The event will take place between Sunrise and Sunset on 21st June 2017
  • Motorcycles must cost no more than £300 (not including the cost of insurance, MOT, tyres or brakes)
  • Motorcycles must hold a valid MOT certificate
  • No modifications to the fuel system at all.
  • Riders must use a designated route
  • The cost of taking part in the event will be £300
  • Places are limited to 25
  • Accommodation and on the road support is provided

LDD17 will again be run from Lands End to John O’Groats. After careful consideration, and lessons learned, specifically regarding the facilities available at each end of the route, the basic plan is as follows

  • Riders to gather at the Lands End visitor centre on the afternoon of June 20th for awards, photography, riders briefing and “Sign on”.
  • “Ceremonial Start” will lead riders a couple of miles to Penzance whereupon everyone will stay at a Premier Inn.
  • Sunrise on 21st June, riders will set off for John O’Groats
  • Sometime later, riders will arrive at the “Natural Retreats” luxury log cabin accommodation at John O’Groats.

As with previous years, places will be awarded on a first come first served basis. We opened the book on 29 Jan 2016 (giving everyone a chance to recover after Christmas), and will take non-refundable deposits of £100 per rider.

The Cost

£300. Includes Hotel accommodation at Lands End and John O'Groats, Packed lunches, van and minibus support on route, transportation of any luggage from LE to JoG, route maps, “Pit Stops” on route, food and hospitality on arrival, commemorative T-Shirt & stickers, organisers liability insurance.

The machines...

In a word “cheap”…

Bought, prepared, legal and ready to ride for no more than £300 NOT INLCUDING tyres, Tax and MOT, paid for out of each participants own pocket. Ebay and Gumtree have taken a hammering, phrases such as “spares or repair” and “unfinished project” have been key.

Disclaimer/Legal stuff....

The Longest Day Down Challenge is NOT a race. The organisers do not condone any riders breaking the law whilst undertaking the challenge, the challenge can be completed without the need to break any laws. An endurance event is inherently risky by its very nature. All of the participants are grown adults (allegedly) who recognise that they undertake the challenge at their own risk and the organisers accept no liability for any injury or damage that may occur as a result. Participants to make their own way to Lands End in time for pre-event briefing at 7PM on 20/06/17. List of bike transport companies can be provided (including our own vans) with prefferential rates negotiated.
